How to make your first mini weaving

Learn warp, weft, plain weave, and finishing on a small wooden loom.

What you need

Small loom, warp cotton, three yarn colors, tapestry needle. Keep a ruler, scissors, and scrap material nearby. Use all equipment according to its manufacturer instructions.

Make it step by step

1. Tie cotton warp to the bottom of a small loom and wind evenly top to bottom at about four ends per inch.
2. Tie a weft yarn to the first warp. Go over the first strand, under the next, and repeat; reverse on the return row.
3. Leave a little yarn at each turn before beating the row down. This prevents the sides from pulling inward.
4. Weave several color blocks. Cut the warp at the loom ends and tie adjacent pairs before hanging.

Check your work

Look for even tension, secure thread ends, and clean edges. If the sample puckers or pulls out of shape, loosen the tension and test on scrap before continuing.
