How to sew a sturdy tote pocket
Add a useful pocket to a plain canvas tote using one rectangle and straight seams.

What you need
Cotton canvas, sewing machine, thread, ruler. Keep a ruler, scissors, and scrap material nearby. Use all equipment according to its manufacturer instructions.
Make it step by step
- Cut canvas 9 x 10 in and press 1/2 in on both sides and the bottom.
- Fold the top edge 1/2 in twice; stitch close to the inner fold.
- Center the pocket on a flat tote and pin through only the front layer.
- Sew down one side, across the bottom, and up the other side. Backstitch at both top corners.
Check your work
Look for even tension, secure thread ends, and clean edges. If the sample puckers or pulls out of shape, loosen the tension and test on scrap before continuing.
