How to make a three-hole stitched notebook

Bind a slim pocket notebook using folded paper, an awl, and one length of thread.

What you need

8 sheets letter paper, cardstock, awl, thread, needle. Keep a ruler, scissors, and scrap material nearby. Use all equipment according to its manufacturer instructions.

Make it step by step

1. Fold eight sheets of letter paper and a slightly larger cardstock cover in half; nest the pages.
2. Mark three holes on the center fold: one at center and two 1.5 in from the ends. Pierce over scrap board.
3. Start inside at the center. Sew out through the top hole, down to the bottom hole, and back inside through center.
4. Tie the thread ends around the long stitch inside, trim, and press the closed notebook under a book.

Check your work

Look for even tension, secure thread ends, and clean edges. If the sample puckers or pulls out of shape, loosen the tension and test on scrap before continuing.
